The first minute

What industrial buyers look for in the first minute

Websites for industrial technology companies have roughly one minute to prove the machine fits the asset. In that minute a plant engineer checks four things: what the system inspects, where it is allowed to operate, what data it returns, and who runs it in production today.

At 8scale, we research inspection and maintenance robotics across worldwide. The market reached USD 2.89 billion in 2024 and grows at 15.8 % CAGR to 2030 (cite as: 8scale Scalebook 2025). Growth pulls in entrants, so your visitor is comparing eight or ten vendors in one afternoon.

Operator interviews for Scalebook 2025 point the same way every time. The opening question is never the vision. It is the zone rating: ATEX or IECEx, Zone 1 or Zone 2, and under which certificate number.

Then come the physical constraints. Manway diameter, IP rating, endurance per battery, sensor payload, ambient temperature range, and whether the unit fits the turnaround window it is meant to serve.

A homepage that opens with an adjective and a hero video answers none of this. The engineer leaves before the second scroll and never enters your pipeline.

What to do: move four filter facts above the fold, as text, application, certification, data output, deployed references. Everything else on the page is secondary.

The specification page converts better than the homepage, because the specification page is the one an engineer can forward internally. Reliability engineers, HSE and procurement each need a different fact from the same document, and none of them need a claim.

Publish the machine data in full: dimensions, mass, degrees of freedom, sensor payload options, navigation method in GNSS-denied spaces, endurance, and the data formats you export, point clouds, ultrasonic wall-thickness readings, thermal imagery. State how those files reach the CMMS or historian, and in which format.

Publish the deployment prerequisites with equal honesty. Permit-to-work requirements, comms and lighting conditions, scaffolding still needed, operator training hours, and the brown-field reality of decades-old PLCs that will not speak to your API without a gateway. Naming a limitation early removes the vendor risk that kills you at the technical audit.

Publish the commercial specification too. CapEx purchase, Robotics-as-a-Service, day rate, mobilization cost, minimum campaign length and who owns the inspection data are the terms that decide whether a maintenance budget or a capital budget carries the project.

This is a positioning question before it is a copy question: which asset class, which zone, which failure mode you serve better than the incumbent rope-access crew. We work that out with market intelligence for robotics companies before anyone writes a page.

What to do: give every product one specification URL, with the numbers as text, not as a gated PDF.

Proof and references

Proof, references and validation structure

Show deployment evidence, not pilot logos. Buyers arrive pre-suspicious: McKinsey's 2024 Manufacturing Survey reports that 87 % of robotics initiatives never scale beyond pilot, as cited in Scalebook 2025. A wall of customer marks reads as pilot theatre, not as installed base.

A usable reference block carries five items: asset class and plant type, country and regulatory regime, operating hours or campaigns completed, findings produced and what the operator did with them, and the function that signed off, maintenance manager, inspection engineer, HSE. Where the customer will not be named, a sector-and-country description holds up. An invented name does not survive one reference call.

Separate what you measured from what you estimate. If the downtime avoided is modelled, say it is modelled, state the assumption and the base year, and let the reader challenge it. That single discipline separates you from every deck the engineer has already discarded.

Add third-party validation that a procurement officer can verify independently: certificate numbers, notified body, class society approval, university or institute test reports, and the standards the test followed.

In Scalebook 2025 we analyze vendors such as Flyability, Gecko Robotics and ANYbotics as market cases; they are analysis subjects, not our customers. What travels furthest in their public material is verifiable operating detail, not adjectives.

What to do: rebuild the reference section around evidence fields, and delete every logo you cannot support with an operating fact.

Answer the question in the first sentence, then show the number, that structure serves a plant engineer and a language model equally. Both scan for a direct answer with a verifiable basis; both leave when the page warms up for three paragraphs first.

Give each buyer question its own URL. "Which robot inspects a Zone 1 pressure vessel" and "what does a RaaS campaign cost" are two searches, two pages and two decisions, not one product overview.

Render figures as static text with base year, source and method in the same line. Animated counters and placeholders that can resolve to "$0" or "0 %" get indexed in their broken state and quoted back at you. Every 8scale figure on our own pages carries a base year and a citation string: cite as: 8scale Scalebook 2025.

Keep entity data identical everywhere, legal name, seat, VAT ID, managing director, Impressum, schema, LinkedIn. Answer engines resolve companies by consistency, and near-miss spellings split your evidence across two entities.

For DACH, publish German pages written natively, with German headings and German standards vocabulary. Machine-translated safety terminology reads as a warning sign to the exact reader you want.

We treat the site as one channel inside a wider plan; the sequencing sits in go-to-market for industrial technology.

What to do: list the ten questions your last ten buyers asked, and audit whether each has a page that answers it in the opening sentence.

Visit to enquiry

Industrial technology websites: from visit to qualified enquiry

A qualified enquiry names an asset, a zone, a window and a budget line. Anything less is a contact-form entry that costs your sales engineer an hour to disqualify.

Ask for those fields directly: asset class, site country, ATEX or IECEx zone, next turnaround or outage date, current inspection method and annual spend, preferred contract model. Six fields cost you raw volume and buy you first calls worth taking. In a market growing at 15.8 % CAGR to 2030 (cite as: 8scale Scalebook 2025), sales engineer time is the constraint, not traffic.

Make the button say what happens next. "Request the specification sheet", "Scope your question", "Request the methodology" all describe an action. "Learn more" describes nothing and attracts everyone.

Then close the loop behind the form. Named owner, defined response time, and fields that map to your pipeline stages, so an outage date in eleven months is nurtured rather than marked lost, the mechanics sit in CRM and lead management for industrial suppliers.

One caveat about our own field, including us. A website cannot fix an unclear market position, and no agency should sell you one before that question is settled. We build and run sites only as Anchor, execution on the basis of our own intelligence, downstream of the research, never as a standalone project. That order is described in industrial go-to-market execution.

What to do: count last quarter's enquiries that arrived with an asset and a date. That number, not sessions, is your site's output.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Publish the pricing model, even when you cannot publish the price. Day rate versus purchase, mobilization cost, minimum campaign length and data ownership tell a buyer which budget line applies. Hiding the model does not protect margin; it removes you from the shortlist before the first call.

Gating works for depth, not for basics. Specifications, certificates and interfaces belong on indexable pages, because that is what search engines and answer engines can quote. Gate the full study or report, as we do with Scalebook, and keep the headline figures freely citable.

Fewer pages, answered properly. One page per buyer question, each opening with a direct answer and carrying verifiable numbers, beats forty pages of overlapping overviews. Ten precise pages are also easier to keep accurate when a certificate, a sensor option or a price model changes.

Yes, written natively rather than translated. German buyers search in German standards vocabulary, Instandhaltung, Ex-Schutz, Stillstandsplanung, and machine-translated safety terminology reads as a risk signal. English alone limits you to headquarters readers, not the plant engineers who specify.

No. A website converts demand that positioning, references and outreach have already created. Without a defined dive site, asset class, zone, failure mode, the site attracts curiosity, not enquiries. Settle the market question first, then build pages that answer it precisely.
